The Debut – Jaycee: May 12, 2012

Happy 18th Birthday Jaycee!
One of the things about doing make-up is that I get to experience a lot of different types of events.  On May 12, 2012, I experienced my first Philippine Debut.  It is a coming-of-age party celebrated on (or near) the young woman’s eighteenth birthday.  It is a party where the celebrant has a court of 18 people – 9 men and 9 women – with a uniform outfit and a gorgeous gown for the birthday girl.  The party structure is very similar to a wedding with the court performing traditional dances for the guests.

The birthday girl is Jaycee, a lovely young woman who picked out a yellow gown for herself that was breathtaking.  Her court wore tuxedos and bright and flirty coral dresses.  Jaycee wanted her make-up simple and elegant so she was camera ready and not overdone.

Now if you’re counting, we had Jaycee, her 9 court members, mom of the celebrant and several aunts who wanted hair and make-up in about 4 hours’ time.  The stylists that joined me are independent stylist, Dana Espinoza and Salon Trisse stylists, Allison Perkins and Lindsay Vrane.

Side note:  Allison does my hair and I LOVE it.  She is a master at matching the perfect shade for your skin tone.  You should definitely check out Salon Trisse and all the stylists there.

Here are the lovely ladies:

Jaycee

Jaycee was A-DOR-A-BLE.  She was the exact opposite of high-maintenance and was as cool as a cucumber even though she was going to be performing in front of her friends and family later that evening.  She wanted glamour without going over the top.  We decided on browns to accent her eyes with a darker lip.

Look at those cheekbones!

Dana gave her a braid to keep the hair off her face during her performance and put her thick hair up into a low and curled bun.  She looked beautiful and when she came down in her gown, she was breathtaking.

Court: Maggie

Maggie was looking for defined eyes but nothing too dark.  Look at those brown eyes shine!

I LOVE the intricacy of the bun with the braids.  It looks perfect… but not too perfect.  Gorgeous!

Court: Mya

One of the popular looks of the day was the “Kim Kardashian Eyes”.  How I feel about The Kardashians aside… Mya’s eyes are the perfect shape for the smoky eye look.  She topped it off with extra-long lashes.  She was worried about them being too long, but I think we can all agree they suit her well.

Her bun was surrounded with a braid that was simple perfection.

Court: Natalie

Natalie is an adorable blonde that was perky and fun.  She didn’t want anything too dark on her eyes… which is a good thing since it would overwhelm her fair coloring.  One of the issues with blondes is that their eyebrows and lashes are also blonde as well which makes them disappear into the face.  I made sure she got a quadruple layering of mascara and made sure we colored in her brows.

Another braid with a twist.  I love the “messy” little pieces sticking out that makes the look fun and flirty instead of ballerina-like.  Love it!

Court: Sara

Another brown-eyed beauty and her only requests were to (1) not be too heavy on the eyes and (2) let her wear chapstick as lip gloss.  Truth be told, her lovely smile didn’t need anything BUT chapstick!

Dana – I swear it’s like an illusion that her hair is just floating above her shoulders.  Let me tell you, Sara had A LOT of hair and Dana got it swept up into a low bun with curls and pieces framing her face.  I don’t know how she did this, but it looked incredible.

Court: Christina

Christina wanted the dark smoky eye, but didn’t really want false lashes.  I had to figure out how to extend her lashes while using the brown tones she requested.

I don’t know how Dana made this French Braid-twist hybrid, but it looks flawless.

Court: Gabi

Gabi was the first to request “Kardashian Eyes” and she had the perfect eyes for the look.  The gold highlights to her eyes accented her smoky eyeliner.  She also has great pink lips that could take minimal gloss and stand out.

Gabi had thick hair and Dana put it up with large curls pinned under.  I’m not sure how these things stay put, but Dana makes it happen.

Court: Jenny

The celebrant’s sister wanted a deep smoky eye with long lashes.  I went with a bronze against a charcoal liner.

Jenny wanted an up-do to the side and Lindsay got her thick hair curled and pulled to the side as though it was hovering there.  I loved it and wished I had enough hair to have her do this to me!

Court: Krissette

Krissette wanted her eyes sharply defined and I can understand why… she’s got a lovely almond shape that begs to be framed.

Krissette wanted her hair pulled off her face with a braid and Allison gave her what she wanted with her own stylish flair.  The braid framed half of her face with long curls cascading from her up-do in absolute perfection.

Family: Cha

The birthday girl’s aunt wanted a dramatic look.  I didn’t want to do anything too harsh on her eyes because her lips were incredible.  Unfortunately, we didn't get a great picture of her since my camera chose to wig-out at the wrong time, so this will have to do...

Cha wanted her straight hair left down and to have some body.  I love the series of curls Dana put into the back and the sweeping long bangs.

Family: Esther aka Babes

Esther, aunt to the celebrant, was petite and delicate.  She made me laugh when she asked for “not Cha’s make-up.”  She’s not the glitzy type, but I really wanted to accent her eyes and her delicate features.

Her hair has plenty of volume and Dana framed her face and make-up perfectly.

Unfortunately, time was running short and the Jaycee's mom and cousin sprinted from hair and make-up before we were able to snap a picture.

All in all, the three stylists did 15 up-dos and I did 13 faces of make-up in roughly four-and-a-half hours.  I think it was some kind of record.  I want to give a special thanks to Dana, Allison and Lindsay for knocking it out of the park and my husband for taking all the pictures and keeping me somewhat sane throughout the morning and afternoon.
